Prattville Dragoons SCV Camp 1524 Place Flags on Confederate Veterans Graves as Part of Confederate History and Heritage Month

Members of the Prattville Dragoons, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1524 placed flags on Confederate Veterans graves at a number of local cemeteries on Saturday March 26th to honor their service in recognition of Confederate History and Heritage Month upcoming in April.  Adjutant Wayne Sutherland procured new flags for the effort and he, Color Sgt John Dennis, and compatriots Louis Turner and Darrell Haywood placed flags on the graves at Prattville's Oak Hill cemetery removing old tattered flags placed last year.  At the same time new camp 1st Lt Rob Schwartz and compatriots Harold Grooms, Tyrone Crowley and Mike Thomas set flags at the two cemeteries at Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury on the three hundred graves of the Confederate veterans graves there who once resided at the Confederate Soldiers' Home which operated there from 1902-1939.  Camp Chaplain Brantley also placed new flags on the Confederate veterans graves at Rocky Mount cemetery in Prattville.  This was a tremendous effort by these men in placing Confederate Battle flags on the graves of these honorable veterans to commemorate the Cause for which they fought in the War for Southern Independence.  The beautiful flags with vibrant red and blue colors waving in the breeze makes for an amazing visual.

Prattville Dragoons SCV Camp 1524 Meeting for March 2022

Twenty Dragoons and compatriots gathers on Thursday March 10th at 6pm for the regular monthly camp meeting held at the Prattville Masonic Lodge.  Rob Schwartz played a number of songs on his guitar before the meeting proper as outstanding background music.  To open the meetings, Chaplain Brantley provided an Invocation followed by the pledges and salutes to the flags by Color Sgt Dennis.  Commander Waldo recited the SCV Charge and then provided information about upcoming events including the flag settings at Oak Hill and the Confederate Memorial Park cemeteries, the spring picnic coinciding with the CMP Living History and the Cityfest where the Dragoons will man a booth. Commander presided over the elections for the camp officers and among other offices for which the current officers remained, Rob was elected the new 1st Lieutenant.  Following the elections Commander also provided information from the Treasurer's report as well as highlights of the camp's activities over the past year as part of the Commander's annual report.

Ryan Blocker was the guest speaker for the evening and as has become an annual tradition, the Dragoons presented her with a check for $500 for the continuance of the great work at the Alabama State Archives for preservation and conservation of artifacts from the period of the War Between the States.  Ryan is the curator and Collections Coordinator at the Archives.   The Archives contains over 530,000 historical artifacts and 91 flags in their collection of flags from the Ware of Northern Aggression.  Additionally, they have many other artifacts like the sword of Lt Socrates Spigner which has a jeweled hilt rapier and his troy is told on the scabbard; he was killed mere days before the end of the War and the sword was found years later in the closet of a house in Columbus GA.  Ryan expressed how she enjoys learning the story behind the artifacts such as this.

A slide show provided photos showing the use of an electrolysis bath used to remove rust from metal objects including a bomb which was built at the Prattville gin works.  Ryan studied at the International Preservation Center specializing in textiles which includes of course the flags in the Archives collection as well as many items of clothing.  The efforts around the historic flag conservation began in 1987 under Bob Bradley to conserve those flags which had been on permanent display.  Bob worked with some of the preeminent vexillologists in studying and understanding the flag history and conservation methods and technologies.  The difference between conservation and restoration is that the former preserves evidence of damage which tells the story of the flag including puncture marks from battles and pieces removed as souvenirs by soldiers.

Some of these flags had been previously conserved but using poor methods including a flag from the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment which had netting sewn to it, stretching the flag's fabric and required this backing to be painstakingly removed. Another flag was the Flag of The Rifle Scouts captured by the 4th Ohio Cavalry in Selma.  It was presented to the UDC in 1909 and came to the Archives mounted in a frame. When removed it was shredded.  Thru the conservation process though it was discovered that it was a First National Flag emblazoned with the inscription "Death Before Submission".  Through donations the Archives has raised over $554000 and conserved 28 flags.  Presently work is paused on these historic flags as additional room is needed for storage and display of these.

Other artifacts include a New York Beauty quilt.  The story said a Mrs. Cohen of Pleasant Hill AL defended the quilt from Union raiders with her shotgun. Photos of a wooden canteen and an intricate wooden pipe were also shared.  Also two period souvenir scarves sold to raise money for the Confederate defense.  Also socks from a courier of General Forrest embroidered with the First National Flag.  And a rare bright red artillery kepi.  Of course the General Wheeler uniform was shown as the conservation of that coat and trousers is complete in large part due to the donations specifically for this activity made by the Alabama Division Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Prattville Dragoons SCV Camp 1524 Chaplain's Column for March 2022 - A World at War

 Luke 21:10

"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom."

Psalm 47:8

"God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne."

It seems like every week we have a new terror/ distraction in the world. We go from a "pandemic" to a potential "WW3 scenario" within a few days.

Biblically, the scenario playing out in Ukraine has brought many people to question if this is the end times.?

Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:6 that we will "hear of wars and rumors of wars." But he also warned that the Son of God and Man would not yet return. He further added that even he did not know the day or the hour from His heavenly father.

Last evening I walked in to go to bed and Jen had begun reading Revelation. I advised her that it was not a good idea to read Revelation before trying to sleep. It can keep you up at night. As Mark Twain said, "it's not the parts of the bible that I don't understand that concern me, but the parts that I do."

What if it is the end times? Let us also remember that after the end of time and tribulation that God will have created a "new Jerusalem." He will "wipe every tear from every eye." We will be reunited with loved ones and receive our heavenly bodies. No more pain and sorrow.

How can you take part in this joyous occasion? Take this opportunity before it is too late and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Ask him to absolve you of your sins. Receive the sacrament of baptism and find a local church to attend. Find a small group or class so that you may have others to talk to. "Iron sharpens iron!" Do it today!

Getting back to the end of days. Yes, there will be dark times before Jesus comes again. But we have that assurance in Christ that death has been defeated and so has our enemy, satan. We win!

Rejoice!

Remember those on our prayer list.

Prattville Dragoons SCV Camp 1524 Commander's Column for March 2022 - Parallels between the War for Southern Independence and the Ukraine War

The current war in Ukraine has drawn comparisons to the War for Southern Independence.  Compatriot Rob Schwartz stated as such in a Tweet recently.  Although Ukraine achieved independence from Russia with the breakup of the USSR in 1991, Russia has long sought to bring Ukraine back under the control and influence of Moscow if not as a state of Russia.  In 2014, Russia invaded Ukraine and annexed the Crimean Peninsula and has since backed a rebellion led by pro-Russia separatists in the eastern region of Ukraine.  Pro-Western actions by Ukraine to tie the country more closely to the European Union economically and even NATO military defense has angered Russian leadership and prompted the invasion of their sovereign neighbor.  “Putin has said Ukrainians and Russians “were one people — a single whole.” “ (https://www.vox.com/22917719/russia-ukraine-invasion-border-crisis-nato-explained) While Ukraine has been an independent nation for thirty years before this , Putin’s War, whereas the Southern states in 1860 and 1861 only briefly claimed their independence before Lincoln launched his War, many statements and observations by pundits are strikingly reminiscent although the world’s collective reaction is much more accepting of the concept of freedom and independence today a century and a half after the War for Southern Independence.

In a parallel with Putin supplying rebel forces in the eastern regions of Ukraine over the past decade and gathering 150,000 troops in Belarus and along the Ukrainian border in the months prior to the invasion on February 24, 2022, after South Carolina declared its independence in December 1860, Lincoln responded by attempting to resupply Union forces at Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861 provoking a response from the independent sovereign Confederate forces in Charleston across the harbor.  “On April 15, 1861, just three days after the attack on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling forth the state militias, to the sum of 75,000 troops, in order to suppress the rebellion (as he viewed the Southern states in secession).”  (https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/civil_war/LincolnEmergencySession_FeaturedDoc.htm#:~:text=On%20April%2015%2C%201861%2C%20just,order%20to%20suppress%20the%20rebellion.)  Confederate President Jefferson Davis stated in an address to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States of America in Montgomery on April 29, 1861, “We seek no conquest.  All we ask is to be left alone.”   Union troops invaded Virginia and Missouri in June of that year.   Putin claimed the Ukraine government was guilty of genocide against the separatist rebel forces.  Four days after Putin’s forces invaded, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba appealed to the people of Russia and to the world, "Ukraine has not attacked anyone and does not plan to attack anyone. We want to live in peace."  Putin and Lincoln manufactured threats to justify or provoke aggression.

Why the war in Ukraine?  President Zelensky was elected in 2019 and has proven to be more pro-Western than the Kremlin would like, seeking greater economic ties to the West and even EU membership.   Just as in all wars, one need only follow the money.  Ukraine is the breadbasket of eastern Europe.   The Southern states were the agricultural engine of the United States.  Critical strategic gas pipelines run thru Ukraine.  Putin cannot afford to allow Ukraine to form permanent strategic economic ties with the West including European Union membership at the expense of Russian influence and control.  Similarly, Lincoln's stated purpose for invading the Southern states was to collect his tariff revenues from the Southern ports.  Lincoln long espoused protectionist policies which required the agricultural goods and resources of the Southern states to fuel Northern industries and the captive populace of the Southern states as a market for the products manufactured in the Northern states.   (https://blogger.com/u/1/blog/post/edit/6229202435605220184/8458143139681021623 , https://quod.lib.umich.edu/l/lincoln/lincoln1/1:423.1?rgn=div2;view=fulltext )

Just as Lincoln prosecuted his “total war” and imprisoned critics, the Kremlin has banned social media inside Russia and arrested protestors.  Russia news media spews propaganda claiming Ukrainian genocide akin to the Lincoln administrations adoption of the emancipation and abolitionist crusade against the atrocity of slavery.   Oksana Markarova, Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S., told reporters Saturday February 26th, "We are defending our homes, we are defending our families, we are defending democracy, we are defending our choice to be sovereign.”  (https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/russia-ukraine-invasion-war-donbas-kyiv-troops-today/)  Our Confederate ancestors fought and died in pursuit of independence to preserve the founders ideals of liberty and freedom and the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and in defense of their homes, families, states and their sovereign Confederate States of America.  US Rep. Waltz has stated Putin may start “Scorched-Earth' Attacks on Ukraine reminiscent of the punitive indiscriminate scorched earth campaign of Sherman’s March to the Sea.   US Sen Ldr McCarthy was quoted saying the Ukrainians "are fighting for their freedom" and using kitchen knives, Molotov cocktails, anything as they are outgunned by the Russian forces, the world’s second most powerful army (in terms of defense expenditures).  The Confederates were similarly outnumbered and outgunned, resorting to muskets and hand to hand combat against the Union forces superior in numbers and possessing the most advanced repeating guns and more artillery.

But today, 162 years after the Southern states attempted independence to form their Confederacy, with a century past of World Wars, a Cold War, the crumbling of the Soviet empire, and countless countries gaining their independence from colonialism and communism, world acceptance to the concept of self-determination and sovereignty is much greater whereas the Confederate States had much difficulty being recognized by the European nations of the Victorian era.  "One reason Ukraine’s fight has engendered such a strong emotional reaction is that there is something inherently stirring about a people defending their homeland from a would-be imperial overlord, and that’s fundamentally what’s happening on the ground in Ukraine. If anyone had any doubt that Ukraine has its own national identity, the early days of this war should have eliminated it. And another layer of national heroes and national lore is being created as we speak. Of course, Putin is appealing to nationalist sentiment and themes himself, but his case that Ukraine isn’t an independent nation is spurious, and he explicitly pines for a return to empire. His war trespasses against the norm of national self-determination established after World War II. The Latvian prime minister put the issue very well the other day, underlining how the struggle in Europe is between nation-states and a budding empire. The defense of true nationalism — i.e., self-governing peoples who don’t want to be swallowed up by countries seeking a return to supposed imperial grandeur — is going to be a key element of the West’s pushback against the Russia-China challenge in the years ahead."  (“Nationalism’s Finest Hour” by Rich Lowry of National Review)  As Jefferson Davis stated, "The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form."

Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1524 Grounds Clearing Work at Historic Pea Ridge Cemetery in Burnsville Alabama

Members of Camp 1524 spent Saturday morning February 26th at Pea Ridge Cemetery near Burnsville AL clearing undergrowth around the graves under the pines at this historic place.  Camp Quartermaster Bill Myrick, Color Sgt John Dennis, Comms Officer Doug Butler and compatriots Rob Schwartz and Darrell Haywood worked the project chopping down small pines, bushes and weeds which had grown thick around the grounds.  The men used chainsaws, weed eaters with blades, swing blades and wood chippers on the bushes and small trees.  This is a long term project which will take multiple workdays but these compatriots got off to a great start on a neglected resting place for a number of Revolutionary War and Confederate veterans.  A number of these tombstones are massive and tell amazing stories including that of Needham C. Bedingfield whose marker records the battle in which he was wounded.  US and Confederate flags were placed at the tombstones of these veterans.  This is another terrific community service project undertaken by SCV Camp 1524 which also honors these veterans of two of America's historic conflicts which largely formed and shaped our country.  The photos show some images of the grounds before and after the work performed this day.
