The Prattville Dragoons had an impressive entry
in the Millbrook Mardi Gras parade on Saturday February 3rd. At least 20
participants, including Mechanized Cavalry, Dragoons and family members joined
to ride or walk with Commander Waldo's purple Dodge Charger, golf cart and of
course the Mech Cav bikes. All vehicles were decorated with Mardi Gras banners
and colors with plenty of Confederate Battle Flags attached to the vehicles or
carried by participants. Dragoons participating included Commander Waldo, 1st Lt.
Harold Grooms, 2nd Lt. Karl Wade, Past Commander Bill Myrick, Bill Gill, Don
Owens, Will Dismukes and Dave Thomas. Other Dragoons, such as Al Booth, were
present in other entries in the parade. Don Owens rode his bike as a new member
of the Mech Cav in his new Confederate uniform and Josh Stover worked
hard setting up and manning the Dragoons booth at the Festival at the Village Green park. Members of the Mech Cav came from as far
away as Atmore to ride with our entry and were of course a big hit with the spectators. The Dragoons parade entry was introduced at the reviewing stand at the Village Green as "representing our Southern Heritage".
Hundreds of mini Battle Flags were handed out to
the crowds along with other Confederate themed throws, candy, beads, etc. We
were extremely well received by the throng of spectators and the parade
organizers. As usual, people were clamoring for the mini flags and SCV coins. Besides the Mech Cav, Brigade
Commander Butch Godwin stayed with the Dragoons the whole day...at the parade and afterward at the camp's festival booth which was manned until the festival ended at 3:30. There was good sales of our camp stores at our booth plus we made many contacts of
potential members while giving out more mini-Battle flags, popcorn, hand-warmers and SCV pamphlets. It was a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to our Millbrook friends and neighbors and explain the SCV purpose to
the public with the use of visual aids. One of the organizers with the Millbrook Revelers greeted us at the festival recognizing that the SCV was an historical organization over 120 years old.
